  • Condition: FINE condition - clean, sturdy, solid piece all around and perfectly usable. See our photos: thick red lacquer finish has a few minor defects: one side has a few small white paint spots that don't detract as they are "swallowed up" by the red & exterior bottom has a crack that is not noticeable from the interior and seems not to affect stability or feel in any way. Last four photos, 3 chips & 1 ding: (1) chip on rim (2) two chips at bottom corners (3) ding on one side. Defects are minor - basket shows very well.

    Authentic antique
    Chinese dou or basket, made in the period from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. A dou is a traditional wood gathering basket or bucket joined at the corners with metal braces and reinforced or repaired with metal plates. The wood handle that crosses the center is reinforced along the top edge with a metal strip for durability. Most dous were un-decorated, working containers, used in the country for gathering and transporting rice or grain. This example has a bright Chinese red, thick lacquer finish. It's a beautiful, functional piece.

    Dou measures 13" x 12  3/4" and 10" tall/deep. Lot weight is 5 lbs. 7 oz., estimated package weight is 10 lbs. Will be thoroughly padded and carefully packed for secure, intact delivery.
