Antique Chinese Wood and Bamboo Stacking Wedding Basket 2 Compartments

Available for sale is an antique Chinese wedding basket. The basket is two compartments and breaks down into three pieces. The main basket is made up of the handle and the lower compartment, the other two pieces are the upper compartment (stacks on the lower compartment) and the lid (stacks on the upper compartment). The overall height of the basket is 22" and overall width is 16-3/4". The height of the basket is 15-1/4" without the handle. The inside measurement of the compartments is 14" wide. The upper compartment is 3-1/2" deep, the lower compartment is 5-1/4" deep. The main part of the basket is made of wood, the handle is likely made of bamboo. There are twisted metal wire details on the lower compartment and the lid,these are a bit loose, but can be glued back down if desired. The lid has a scene depicting a geisha, her father and her suitor in a gold finish paper that has been sealed with lacquer. The basket is in very nice condition, only one crack in the lid (shown in pictures) probably from swelling and contracting of the wood over time. The crack does not detract from the aesthetics of the piece, it just reminds you it is an antique and comes with character you can't find in new manufactured items.  It is clear that this was a handmade basket, there are slight inconsistencies with dimensions, etc. that are indicative of handmade items. The lid underside has a red wax import stamp, indicating that this was a legal import from China into another country. This basket was purchased about 25 years ago from a Chinese antique dealer in Maryland. It is a wonderful display/decor piece that can also serve as storage for smaller items. The finish is somewhere between gloss and matte, it is a lovely piece to enjoy.
