A lovely antique hand-made Chinese wedding basket with beautiful hand-painted floral motifs, overlapping bent elm wood and bronze handles and medallion embellishments.
The geometric motif and floral details are enliven in traditional red, black and gold tones, with a lovely patinated lacquer finish and bonze accents. The cover is decorated with a central medallion of three figures in a court yard below a low-hanging plum tree.
Wedding rituals have a long history in ancient China—the most significant custom being the presentation of wedding gifts. This basket opens to reveal two compartments of stacked trays. The gifts carried in those trays represented the couple’s engagement, the groom’s promises to the bride’s family and the acceptance of the bride and groom into each other’s family.
